Sediment-Peridotite Reaction Controls Fore-Arc Metasomatism and Arc Magma Geochemical Signatures

چکیده

Subduction of oceanic crust buries an average thickness 300–500 m sediment that eventually dehydrates or partially melts. Progressive release fluid/melt metasomatizes the fore-arc mantle, forming serpentinite at low temperatures and phlogopite-bearing pyroxenite where slab surface reaches 700–900 °C. This is sufficiently high to melt subducted sediments before they approach depths arc magmas are formed. Here, we present experiments on reactions between melts peridotite 2–6 GPa/750–1100 °C, which correspond a subducting slab. The reaction volatile-bearing partial derived from with depleted leads separation elements layered arrangement metasomatic phases, layers consisting orthopyroxene, mica-pyroxenite, clinopyroxenite. selective incorporation in these closely resembles chemical patterns found K-rich magmas. Trace were imaged using LA-ICP-TOFMS, applied here investigate distribution trace within layers. Experiments different duration enabled estimates growth front, ranges 1–5 m/ky. These explain contents high-field strength as being due their loss during melting sedimentary materials fore-arc.

Trace elements in anorthite megacrysts from the Kurile Island Arc: a window to across-arc geochemical variations in magma compositions

Anorthite megacrysts from twelve volcanic centers of the Kurile Island Arc were analyzed by the ion microprobe for concentrations of: Li, Be, B, F, Mg, P, Cl, K, Ti, Fe, Co, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Pb. These 1–2-cm megacrysts are mainly found as early phenocrysts in basalts, but are also present in andesites, rhyolites and hybrid rocks from almost every studied vo...

Water storage and amphibole control in arc magma differentiation

Arc magmas are distinguished from those of other tectonic settings by several first order characteristics; 1) they tend to be realtively differentiated with even the most mafic rocks in a suite typically ≥50% SiO2, 2) they typically contain high H2O contents and 3) they have distinctive trace element signatures. The “standard” model for arc petrogenesis involves melting of a mantle wedge, preco...

Across-arc geochemical trends in the Izu-Bonin arc: Contributions from the subducting slab

[1] Abstract: We propose that across-arc differences in the geochemistry of Izu-Bonin arc magmas are controlled by the addition of fertile-slab fluids to depleted mantle at the volcanic front, and residual-slab fluids to fertile mantle in the back arc without slab melting or contemporaneous back arc spreading. The arc consists of a volcanic front, an extensional zone, and seamount chains (the W...

Arc Basalt Simulator version 2, a simulation for slab dehydration and fluidfluxed mantle melting for arc basalts: Modeling scheme and application

[1] Convergent margin magmas typically have geochemical signatures that include elevated concentrations of large-ion lithophile elements; depleted heavy rare earth elements and high field strength elements; and variously radiogenic Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic compositions. These have been attributed to the melting of depleted mantle peridotite by the fluxing of fluids or melts derived from subducti...
